End game futurism and the necessity of the space program
Monday, April 6, 2009 at 11:27AM As the recession drags on into its third quarter, critics of aeronautical, extraterrestrial research point to the many better uses here on earth for the money sent up in space.
This is shortsighted, of course.
The problems on earth such as starvation and poverty are awful, yes, but they are only symptoms of the greater crisis of overpopulation.
Even a cursory knowledge of ecology reveals that the human race is well beyond its allotted carrying capacity. As we continue to grow exponentially, it becomes evident that there are only two possibilities for the continued survival of the human race: draconian population control, or interplanetary colonization.
we cannot continue to grow at our current rate and not leave the planet without suffering a dramatic loss in quality of life (for the western world first, and then the rest).
Granted, this makes the assumption that we won't find another way to kill ourselves. Nuclear holocausts or impact events, while apocalyptic should they occur before we leave the planet, should serve as even more of a reason to spread out. re: putting all our eggs in one basket.
We only have one Earth. If anything happens to this planet right now, we're done for. We have a responsibility to protect our species. The space program is the only method by which we can do that.
